UICC-IARC Development Fellowship

UICC

UICC and IARC are offering a joint Development Fellowship Award in cancer epidemiology. The objective of this award is to allow one of the most promising participants of the IARC Summer School to return to IARC and spend a period of up to three months in one of IARC’s Research Groups to receive further training and/or to develop research collaboration.

LSHTM

The IARC Summer School enjoys a collaboration with the LSHTM which holds an annual ‘Cancer Survival’ short course.
Some participants attending the IARC Module 1 may be interested in following on the next week with the LSHTM course. Please note that separate applications are required for the two courses.

Education and Training

Training Courses - Summer School in Cancer Epidemiology - 2013

Applications for the Summer School 2013 are now CLOSED

Course Modules

Two modules will be held from 17 June to 5 July. The first module (Cancer Registration: Principles and Methods) lasts one week and the second module (Introduction to Cancer Epidemiology) two weeks

CANCER REGISTRATION: Principles and Methods (one week, 17-21 June)

Population-based cancer registration is a basic element of cancer control, making possible the rational use of resources as well as the identification of areas in need of research. In many parts of the world, cancer registries provide the only source of information on the size, nature and evolution of the local cancer problem.

The course covers all relevant aspects of data collection, coding and analysis:
  • Sources of information, case-finding and methods of data abstraction;
  • Classification of tumours and coding according to ICD and ICD-O;
  • Quality control, measures of comparability, standard definitions according to IACR http://www.iacr.com.fr/;
  • Data analysis and reporting

Training in the implementation of all registry functions by means of the IARC CANREG-5 software is an integral part of this program.

At the end of this module, and depending on their profile and needs, participants will be able to:
  • Implement and develop a cancer registry (more specifically in low resource settings): sources of information, case-finding, methods of data abstraction, quality control
  • Apply methods of registration: code and classify tumours according to ICD-10 and ICD-O
  • Analyse registry data: use cancer registry data (applying epidemiology methods such as age standardisation and time trend analyses and predictions)
  • Use registry data in the context of cancer research and cancer control planning: write cancer registry reports
  • Use CanReg5 to implement relevant registry data collection functions

INTRODUCTION TO CANCER EPIDEMIOLOGY (two weeks, 24 June-5 July)

The course will focus on the practical application of epidemiological principles and methods to the various cancer control activities, ranging from the search for the causes of cancer to the implementation and evaluation of control programmes.
  • Introduction to biostatistics
  • Measures of occurrence and association
  • Descriptive epidemiological studies in cancer surveillance and research
  • Standardization
  • Cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies
  • Bias and confounding
  • Effect modification
  • Current topics in cancer epidemiology
  • Cancer prevention

At the end of this module, and depending on their profile and needs, participants will be able to:
  • Critically read epidemiological papers and apply results in their work (eg research, government)
  • Design epidemiological studies
  • Design and perform epidemiological studies in collaboration with IARC

Application Procedure

(1) Make sure that a support letter is completed and signed by your supervisor prior to completing the application form. A template is provided here. Applications will not be considered if this support letter is not provided.

(2) Complete the online application form in English. Answer each question. All relevant information should be included on this form.
