After the meeting, the participants formulated a statement of initiatives across the continent, spanning cancer registration, research on cancer etiology, screening and immunization, as well as education and training of cancer research scientists. These initiatives should maximize the effectiveness of the Agency's research strategy, through their alignment and integration with the needs and priorities for cancer prevention and control in Latin America.

http://www.iarc.fr//en/media-centre/iarcnews/2012/ilac2012.php

New breast cancer susceptibility gene found

http://www.iarc.fr//en/media-centre/iarcnews/2012/XRCC2-ajhg.php

Rare Mutations in XRCC2 Increase the Risk of Breast Cancer
The main focus of the study is to investigate genetic, infectious and lifestyle factors in the onset and outcome of head and neck cancers in the region. The study is currently under way in multiple centres in Brazil as well as Argentina, and additional partners are envisaged.
The international study group continues working together using the study base to identify other possible risk factors for those tumours, including some lifestyle factors, occupational exposures, medical conditions and examinations, or certain environmental exposures.
