The International Liver Cancer Study (ILCS) is a network of clinicians, epidemiologists and molecular biologists coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) whose objectives are to improve the understanding of the geographic, pathological, virological and molecular diversity of the disease, as well as the identification of reliable biomarkers for risk assessment, early detection and monitoring of the disease.

Two French scientists, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier, recognised for their work in uncovering the AIDS virus, and a German virologist, who uncovered the papillomavirus that causes cervical cancer, were jointly awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine today, Monday 6 October, 2008.
