GLOBOCAN 2008: Cancer Incidence and Mortality Worldwide

01/05/2010

The International Agency for Research on Cancer today announces GLOBOCAN 2008, which provides the most accurate assessment of the global cancer burden and shows that in 2008 a majority of the 12.7 million new cases of cancer and the 7.6 million cancer deaths worldwide occurred in developing countries.

The estimates for 2008 benefit from new sources of data and a comprehensive review of the estimation procedures.

GLOBOCAN 2008 provides a series of cancer site and country-specific factsheets, and enables computation of the future burden of cancer according to projected population changes up to 2030.

Facilities for the tabulation and visual description of the cancer burden in 182 countries and according to world region can be accessed via the GLOBOCAN 2008 website: http://globocan.iarc.fr
