Senior Visiting Scientist Award 2011
05/12/2011One of the objectives of the Agency is to generate collaborative research links with scientists around the world and an effective mechanism for achieving this is by making an award to an established scientist to spend time at the Agency in Lyon.
Due to the high number of excellent applications received for the IARC Senior Visiting Scientist Award in 2011, the Agencys Governing Council approved an increase in the budget for 2011, allowing a total of four Awards to be made. The recipients are as follows:
Professor Anssi Auvinen from the Tampere School of Public Health, University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland, joined the Section of Environment and Radiation at IARC for six months, starting on 3 October 2011 to work with Dr Joachim Schüz on the analysis of Interphone material on exposure to ionizing radiation as well as further analyses of nuclear workers study and Interphone study material.
Professor Joakim Dillner from the Department of Medical Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, joined the Infections and Cancer Epidemiology Group at IARC for ten months, starting on 1 September 2011 to work with Dr Silvia Franceschi on type-specific HPV epidemiology before and after HPV vaccination, long-term protective effect of an HPV screening program, and a systematic approach to exploratory tumor virology.
Professor Anna Giuliano from the Cancer Epidemiology Program, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, Tampa, FL, USA, joined the Infections and Cancer Epidemiology Group at IARC for six months, starting on 5 July 2011 to work with Dr Silvia Franceschi on joint publications arising from the natural history of HPV infection in men study (HIM Study), the design of an HPV vaccine trial in women at high risk of HIV infection in southern Africa, and to support training needs related to cancer epidemiology in Morocco.
Professor Nanny Wermuth from the Department of Mathematics, Division of Mathematical Statistics, Chalmers University of Technology & University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden joined the Biostatistics Group at IARC for eleven months, starting on 30 September 2011 to work with Dr Graham Byrnes on new ways of detecting mediating or confounding effects applied to existing sets of data at IARC.
