IARC Publications

The publications programme of the International Agency for Research on Cancer is an integral part of its mission to coordinate and conduct research into cancer, with the aim of providing a scientific basis for cancer prevention. Several renowned and authoritative series, handbooks, textbooks and manuals reflect the wide range of the Agency's activities. WHO Press is the exclusive distributor of all IARC publications.

The IARC Publications programme

Peer-reviewed papers and articles

The Agency publishes a high volume of peer-reviewed scientific papers in top quality journals in its fields of expertise. It is noteworthy how many of the publications involve young scientists training at the Agency and also how many reflect the international collaborations that characterise much of the Agency’s work.

Reference book titles

The programme is responsible for several highly prominent scientific publications series:

The WHO Classification of Tumours series (Blue Books), renowned worldwide for their quality. Production of the 4th Edition is currently in progress.

The IARC Scientific Publications series, with recent additions to the list of 160+titles, spanning the whole range of IARC's research scope.

The IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans identify environmental factors that can increase the risk of human cancer. These include chemicals, complex mixtures, occupational exposures, physical agents, biological agents and lifestyle factors. National and international health agencies can use this information as scientific support for their actions to prevent exposure to potential carcinogens.

To complement the Monograph series, the IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention provide authoritative assessments of cancer-preventive strategies and policies.

In addition, a number of stand-alone reference texts are also part of the IARC Publications list, dealing essentially with epidemiology or statistical methods as applied to cancer research, or landmark publications to illustrate the worldwide burden of cancer (e.g. World Cancer Report).
