Current Research Topics:
  • Etiology and mechanism of lung cancer: studies in Central and Eastern Europe, with emphasis on interaction between tobacco smoking, occupational exposures, and genetic susceptibility factors; project on lung cancer in European women (WELAS, http://welas.iarc.fr/) to investigate descriptive trends, survival, beliefs about tobacco and attributable fractions; study in Nepal focusing on local tobacco products and indoor air pollution ; coordination of an international consortium of molecular and genetic epidemiology studies of lung cancer (ILCCO, http://ilcco.iarc.fr/).
  • Etiology and mechanism of cancers of the upper aero-digestive tract: studies of cancers of the oral cavity, larynx and oesophagus in Western Europe (ARCAGE : http://arcage.iarc.fr/), Latin America, India and Central and Eastern Europe, with emphasis on tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking and other lifestyle factors, occupational exposures, papilloma virus infection and genetic susceptibility factors; coordination of an international consortium of molecular and genetic epidemiology studies of head and neck cancer (INHANCE, http://inhance.iarc.fr/).

  • Tobacco and cancer : Etiological studies on specific aspects of tobacco carcinogenicity, such as the risk entailed by use of smokeless tobacco, smoking of local products.
  • Alcohol and cancer: studying the composition of alcohol from different regions, Acetaldehyde DNA-adducts as biomarkers, high risk populations, burden of disease.
  • Cohort studies in Iran and India: large-scale prospective studies.
  • Second primary neoplasms: risk after specific first primary neoplasms based on an international collaboration of cancer registries.
  • ECNIS: (Environmental Cancer risk, Nutrition and Individual Susceptibility), a Network of Excellence in the 6th EU Framework Programme for Research and Development.
