World Cancer Day 2016. ‘We can. I can.’
Although great strides have been made in cancer treatment and prevention in recent years, the global cancer burden continues to rise and is expected to almost double by 2030.
Within the next two decades, the total number of new cancer cases per year is predicted to reach 24 million due to population growth and ageing alone, compared with an estimated 15 million per year in 2015.
Research shows that about 50% of cancer cases could be prevented based on current knowledge. Individuals and governments, together, can play a vital role in reducing the risk of developing cancer.
To mark World Cancer Day on 4 February, WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) support the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in promoting ways to reduce the global burden of cancer. The theme of the UICC campaign is “We can. I can.” Five IARC experts explain how, together, we can prevent cancer.
