| European Journal of Clinical Nutrition - November 2009 |
| 03/12/2009 - Eur J Clin Nutr (2009) Nov;63 Suppl 4:S1-S274 (special issue, 14 papers) Guest Editors: N. Slimani and B. Margetts Nutrient Intakes and Patterns in the EPIC cohorts from ten European countries (SNIPE) This report, entitled “Nutrient intakes and patterns in the EPIC cohorts from 10 European countries”, follows a previous special issue (Public Health Nutrition Vol. 5, 6B, 2002) on food consumption of a representative sub-sample of subjects from 10 European countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. For this report, 37 000 single 24-hour dietary recalls were collected in a standardised manner using the same dietary software (EPIC-SOFT®, IARC) and a harmonised nutrient database (ENDB) containing 26 nutrients (including energy). The 14 papers in this special issue describe intake of energy and macro-nutrients, minerals, fat- and water- soluble vitamins, and food supplements. Consumption of highly processed foods, glycaemic load and glycaemic index, specific food group combinations explaining nutrient intakes, and insights on under-reporting are also covered. These results provide the first reliable comparisons of both food and nutrient intakes and patterns across European countries, based on a detailed and carefully standardised dietary methodology, and are thus a valuable resource and common benchmark for Europe. This information is particularly useful for understanding and better interpreting dietary exposure and its association with disease (including cancer), and for formulating new etiological hypotheses. | Cancer Letters |
| 17/11/2009 - Volume 286, Issue 1, Pages 1-144 (01 December 2009) Liver cancer, predominantly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), accounts for almost 600 000 deaths annually, largely in Africa and Asia. Yet the pathways by which HCC develops and the causes of the marked geographical differences in HCC risk remain to be fully investigated. A newly-published special issue of the journal Cancer Letters entitled “Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Worldwide Translational Approach” (editors Drs A. Plymoth, I. Chemin, P. Boffetta and P. Hainaut) provides a comprehensive review of the critical research issues in HCC. This publication follows from an IARC-organised International Liver Cancer meeting in 2007, which reviewed the state of HCC knowledge, identified research priorities and discussed a flexible protocol for an International Liver Cancer Study (ILCS, http://ilcs.iarc.fr). | 2009 Nobel Prize for Medicine : new avenues for cancer therapy? |
| 08/10/2009 - The winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2009, Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak, received this distinction “for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase”. Telomerase activity is increased in 80-90% of cancers. This leads to the development of many therapeutic strategies targeting telomerase, either by inhibition of enzyme activity or by employing a cancer vaccine approach to kill telomerase overexpressing tumour cells. Dr Bakary Sylla, an IARC scientist specialized in viral oncogenesis, works in Dr Massimo Tommasino’s laboratory on HPV research and cancer. Listen to Dr Bakary Sylla - RFI Interview |
