 Dr Johannes Clemmesen, a pioneer in cancer research and founder of Danish cancer epidemiology, died at age 102. Dr Hans Storm, former Director of the Danish Cancer Registry -which had been established by Dr Clemmesen back in 1942, pays tribute to his illustrious predecessor. Read |
| IARC launches the SYNERGY website |
| 16/12/2010 - IARC is pleased to launch the SYNERGY website. This website will keep scientists and the public informed about SYNERGY — a pooling project of case–control studies in Europe and North America to study joint effects of occupational lung carcinogens and smoking. The SYNERGY project is funded by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV), and is coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine of the DGUV, Institute of the Ruhr-University Bochum (IPA), and the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences at Utrecht University (IRAS). The SYNERGY project includes data on lifetime occupational and smoking history for more than 13 000 cases and 16 000 controls. A quantitative data driven job–exposure matrix (SYNJEM) based on job title, industry, region and time period will be available in early 2011. Each subject in the SYNERGY population, for each working year, will be assigned a specific exposure level for PAH, asbestos, crystalline silica, chromium and nickel. Sauvaget The dimensions of the CRC problem Best Pract.Res.Clin Gastroenterol., vol. 24, no. 4, pp. 381-396 Colorectal cancer is a significant health problem, the importance of which will increase substantially in the coming years, both in more, as well as in less developed regions of the world. This article published in Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology in a monographic special issue devoted entirely to Colorectal Cancer Screening describes the dimensions of the problem from an epidemiologic viewpoint as well as from the perspective of policy makers and professionals seeking to control the disease. Currently, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer and the fourth most common cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with 1.2 million estimated cases and 609Â 000 estimated deaths in 2008. Based on demographic trends, the annual incidence is expected to increase by nearly 80% to 2.2 million cases over the next two decades and most of this increase will occur in the less developed regions of the world (62%). These regions are ill equipped to deal with the rapidly increasing demand for cancer treatment resulting from population growth and higher life expectancy. Concerted efforts to control colorectal cancer are therefore of great importance worldwide. They will require allocation of additional resources and should be based on an appropriate balance between prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Full Text |

| 07/12/2010 - The IARC Monographs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans are scientific reviews of potential carcinogenic exposures and include chemicals, complex mixtures, occupational exposures, physical and biological agents, and lifestyle factors. National health agencies can use this information as scientific evidence in support of public health or regulatory actions to prevent exposure to potential carcinogens.  Genome-wide association study of renal cell carcinoma identifies two susceptibility loci on 2p21 and 11q13.3 MP Purdue, M Johansson, D Zelenika, JR. Toro, G Scelo, et al. Nature Genetics 2010, Published online 05/12/2010, DOI doi:10.1038/ng.723 Two genetic loci are associated with renal cell carcinoma (RCC), according to a new report published online this week in Nature Genetics in a study led by IARC scientists in collaboration with colleagues from over 50 different centres. These are the first common genetic variants associated with this type of cancer. Approximately 200,000 new cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed worldwide each year, with renal cell carcinoma accounting for 90% of all kidney cancer cases. High blood pressure, obesity and smoking are all risk factors for kidney cancer. The study involved 5,970 individuals with renal cell carcinoma and a similar group of controls. Read article |

M Vieth, P Quirke, R Lambert, L von Karsa, M Risio Prior to the imminent publication of the new European guidelines for quality assurance in colorectal cancer screening and diagnosis, the chapter on quality assurance in pathology and its annex on the annotation of colorectal lesions have been reviewed and published online by Virchows Archiv in order to make the principles and standards recommended in the new EU guidelines known to a wider scientific community. The Guidelines were developed in an international collaborative project that was co-financed by the EU Public Health Programme and coordinated by IARC. The project involved over 90 experts from 32 countries including 22 European countries as well as Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Norway and the United States of America. | Dr Elaine Ron (1943-2010) |
 Dr Elaine Ron, from the Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics, Radiation Epidemiology Branch of the United States National Cancer Institute, an internationally renowned expert in the health effects of exposure to radiation, and a close friend of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, passed away last Saturday 20 November 2010 from cancer. She had served on the Agency's Scientific Council for four years and was Chairperson of the 44th Session of IARC's Scientific Council in 2008. Beyond her field of expertise and scientific achievements, she will be remembered as a thorough, rigorous, yet humorous, passionate and dynamic figure of the cancer research community by all who were fortunate enough to work with her. Genetics of lung cancer susceptibility The Lancet Oncology, Early Online Publication, 14 October 2010 - doi:10.1016/S1470-2045(10)70126-1 Lung cancer is the most common form of cancer death worldwide. Although reduction of tobacco consumption remains the most appropriate strategy to reduce lung-cancer burden, identification of genes involved in the cause of disease could contribute to further understanding of the underlying mechanisms, and eventually lead to additional prevention strategies and targeted treatments.Common gene variants involved in lung cancer have been recently identified through large, collaborative, genome-wide association studies. These studies identified three separate loci that are associated with lung cancer (5p15, 6p21, and 15q25) and include genes that regulate acetylcholine nicotinic receptors and telomerase production. However, much about genetic risk remains to be discovered, and rarer gene variants, such as those of the CHEK2 gene, likely account for most of the remaining risk. There is also a need for studies that investigate how genetic susceptibility is associated with clinical outcome measures, including treatment response and tumour relapse. Bladder cancer risk in painters: a meta-analysis Online First Occup Environ Med 2010; doi 10.1136/oem.2009.051565 A comprehensive meta-analysis corroborates that occupation as a painter is an independent risk factor for bladder cancer, after adjusting for smoking and other occupational exposures. The risk increases with increasing number of years of employment as a painter. This analysis follows from a 2007 IARC Monographs meeting that classified “occupational exposure as a painter” as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) on the basis of increased risks of bladder cancer, lung cancer and mesothelioma. | Resolution on the Prevention and control of non-communicable diseases |
| 18/05/2010 - On the 13th May 2010 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) (see link below) which seeks to halt the increasing trends in premature deaths from NCDs worldwide, with a particular focus on developing countries. Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Overall Cancer Risk in the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) JNCI Advance Access published on April 6, 2010. doi:10.1093/jnci/djq072 The dietary intake of fruits and vegetables on the overall cancer risk was explored in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), a large cohort of nearly 400,000 men and women who developed close to 30,000 cancers all sites combined over nearly 9 years of follow-up. A modest but statistically significant inverse association between fruit and vegetable intake and cancer was observed. "Cancer can be prevented too" is the theme of World Cancer Day this year, emphasising the fact that up to 40% of cancers are considered preventable by application of currently available knowledge. | 15/01/2010 - In an exciting move, the US National Academy of Sciences is organizing a workshop based on the “exposome”, a concept developed by Dr Christopher Wild, now Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
