Regular Budget – 10-year perspective

The IARC Regular Budget has grown during the past decade thanks to the admission of new Participating States, with the number of countries contributing to the budget rising from 21 in 2012 to 26 in 2022*.

*China became IARC’s participating state in 2021 and will contribute to IARC’s regular budget from 2024 onward. Contributions in 2022-2023 will be credited to unbudgeted assessment account hence they are not yet shown in the above figure.

Allocation of Regular Budget for 2022–2023

The IARC Regular Budget for the 2022-2023 biennium is allocated to the following six priority strategic objectives.

  1. Describing the occurrence of cancer
  2. Understanding the causes of cancer
  3. Evaluating cancer prevention interventions
  4. Synthesizing and mobilizing knowledge and strengthening global capacities in cancer science
  5. Strengthening the Agency’s leadership, governance, strategic engagement, and advocacy
  6. Strengthening the efficiency and effectiveness of the Agency’s research and collaboration

 

2020–2021 Regular Budget and Expenditure

The activities during the first year of the current biennium progressed well, and the figure below compares the budget and the expenditure in 2020–2021 for each strategic objective*.

*Programme Budget 2020-2021 was under the previous Medium Term Strategy 2021-2025 and six strategic objectives refer to the following.

  1. Describe the occurrence of cancer
  2. Understand the causes of cancer
  3. Evaluate and implement cancer prevention and control strategies
  4. Increase the capacity for cancer research
  5. Provide strategic leadership and enhance the impact of the Agency’s contribution to global cancer research
  6. Enable and support the efficient conduct and coordination of research
