Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2020

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2020, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will highlight several interesting research projects on breast cancer throughout October, including findings from the African Breast Cancer – Disparities in Outcomes (ABC-DO) study.

The ABC-DO study was a hospital-based cohort study of 2228 women who were newly diagnosed with breast cancer and were prospectively recruited in 2014–2017 in five countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Detailed epidemiological and clinical data on this cohort were collected using an active follow-up protocol based on mobile health (mHealth) using mobile phones, in which participants were contacted every 3 months for updates on their status.

Stay tuned to the IARC website and the IARC Twitter account, @IARCWHO, throughout the month of October for tweets and infographics highlighting the burden of breast cancer and the difficulties faced by women diagnosed with breast cancer in areas such as sub-Saharan Africa; at least one third of the 416 000 deaths from breast cancer that are projected to occur in this region during the next decade could be prevented.
