Flavonoid intake is associated with lower mortality in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Cohort

A new study including contributions from experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and partners finds that a moderate habitual intake of flavonoids is inversely associated with all-cause, cardiovascular disease-related, and cancer-related mortality. The inverse association was particularly clear in smokers and in people who consumed high amounts of alcohol (more than 20 grams of pure alcohol per day).

The study included data from the 56 048 participants in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health cohort study, cross-linked with Danish nationwide registries over a period of 23 years.

Flavonoids are a class of polyphenolic compounds found in abundance in plant-derived foods and beverages, such as fruits, vegetables, dark chocolate, tea, and red wine.
