Video: Dr Marc Gunter on the importance of breast cancer research in low- and middle-income countries

Dr Marc Gunter, Head of the Section of Nutrition and Metabolism at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), emphasizes the need for more research on breast cancer in low- and middle-income countries, in a new video to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the video, Dr Gunter highlights several projects coordinated by IARC that are already contributing much-needed data in this area.

This video is part of a short series of interviews with IARC researchers that cover topics related to breast cancer development, risk factors, and the evidence base for public health recommendations that aim to reduce the burden of this disease.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer type and the leading cause of cancer death in women globally. In 2018, there were an estimated 2.1 million new cases of breast cancer and 627 000 deaths from breast cancer worldwide.
