2009 Senior Visiting Scientist Award and IARC Medal of Honour – Professor Julian Peto
17/03/2011 –
The Infections and Cancer Epidemiology Group was proud to host the IARC Medal of Honour and 2009 Senior Visiting Scientist Awardee, Professor Julian Peto, for six months last year. Professor Peto, from the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, is one of the most influential epidemiologists of his generation. His studies on cancer genetics, asbestos, human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer are a landmark reference in the epidemiological literature. During his stay at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Professor Peto contributed to the EUROGIN 2010 Roadmap on cervical cancer prevention. He also worked on data from the International Collaboration of Epidemiological Studies of Cervical Cancer, a project that pools all the available epidemiological data on risk factors for cervical cancer, exploring the crucial role of age at first intercourse and its relation to lifetime risk of cervical cancer.
