Srabani Mittal (1965–2019)

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Srabani Mittal, who died on Saturday 10 August 2019 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Dr Mittal had been associated with IARC since 1999, when she joined the IARC-led project to evaluate visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and human papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening in Kolkata, India. In October 2018, she became a consultant to IARC for the study that is under way to evaluate the new HPV vaccine developed by the Serum Institute of India.

Dr Mittal also served as a consultant to the United Nations Population Fund and the World Health Organization Regional Office for South-East Asia to review cervical cancer screening programmes in different countries in South Asia, develop training resources, and train nurses and clinicians. She was the Secretary of the Asia-Oceania Research Organisation on Genital Infections and Neoplasia (AOGIN), India.

Dr Mittal was a colposcopy trainer par excellence and participated in several IARC training programmes in India and elsewhere. Before her very untimely death, she had almost completed a digital atlas on VIA and thermal ablation, to be published on the IARC website.

Dr Mittal had a charming personality and a generous heart. She will be greatly missed professionally and personally by all at the Agency.

Our deepest sympathy is with Dr Mittal’s family and friends.
