Tobacco smoking-associated genome-wide DNA methylation changes in the EPIC study

A new study, led by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), examined the potential of epigenetic (DNA methylation) changes in pre-diagnostic blood samples as a marker of exposure to tobacco smoke in a large multinational cohort (EPIC). The study comprehensively catalogued the smoking-associated alterations in the epigenome and showed that these alterations are reversible, underscoring the benefits of smoking cessation.
