A new paper by scientists from the National Cancer Center of China, the National Cancer Center of Japan, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reviews the milestones in the development of population-based cancer registration in China over the past 60 years. The paper was published in The Lancet Oncology.
Since the first cancer registry in China began operating in 1959 in Linzhou, the country has made a systematic effort to enhance its cancer surveillance framework and its use of cancer data. The number of cancer registries increased from 43 in 2008 to 574 in 2019, in line with investment in their expansion.
The paper highlights how cancer registration data have become a critical means to identify health priorities and to track progress in cancer control across the country.
