Publication of evaluation report on the status of Morocco’s breast and cervical cancer screening programme

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Morocco and the Lalla Salma Foundation for Cancer Prevention and Treatment, Morocco, recently published a report (in French) on the status of the implementation, organization, and performance of the breast and cervical cancer screening programme of Morocco.

The breast and cervical cancer screening programme was launched in 2010, initially in two regions of Morocco. The screening facilities were gradually scaled up, so that by 2017 women had access to breast cancer screening in all 12 regions of the country and to cervical cancer screening in 8 of the regions. The new evaluation report highlights the huge efforts made by the Ministry of Health of Morocco to screen 1.1 million women for breast cancer and 0.2 million women for cervical cancer in 2015 and 1.5 million women for breast cancer and 0.2 million women for cervical cancer in 2016. The report also discusses the weaknesses of the screening programme and points out opportunities for improvement.

The evaluation report provides valuable information to policy-makers and programme managers as Morocco plans for the launch of the country’s new cancer control programme in 2020.
