The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is supporting the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) in promoting the 8th European Awareness Week on Alcohol-Related Harm, which takes place on 16–20 November 2020.
As part of the awareness week, Dr Isabelle Soerjomataram, a scientist in the Section of Cancer Surveillance at IARC, will participate in a webinar on alcohol and cancer hosted by WHO/Europe on Monday 16 November, from 15:00 to 16:00 CET. The focus of the event will be the links between alcohol and cancer and the forthcoming Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. In conjunction with this event, WHO/Europe is launching a new fact sheet for policy-makers, “Alcohol and cancer in the WHO European Region: An appeal for better prevention”.
The aims of the awareness week and the fact sheet are to increase awareness among individuals and policy-makers of the overwhelming burden of alcohol-related harm in Europe, to propose possible solutions to the problem, and to highlight the need to address this important public health issue through an integrated approach to alcohol policy.
